Weather-Related Car Accidents in New Mexico

driving in rainy season

Car accidents occur each and every day for a variety of reasons. One common cause of car accidents in New Mexico is poor weather conditions. Unfortunately, even responsible drivers can find themselves involved in a weather-related car accident. While New Mexico is known for its warm and sunny weather, conditions aren’t always so nice.

While bad weather can contribute to an accident, it remains the responsibility of the driver to account for such conditions. Therefore, if a car accident was caused, in part, by bad weather, there is a good shot that the at-fault driver is still liable for any injuries or damages. Whether or not a driver was responsible when it comes to bad weather depends upon whether another driver in the same or similar situation who was exercising appropriate caution, could have avoided the same accident.

Types of Bad Weather in New Mexico

Although New Mexico weather is generally pretty mild – even during the winter – there are still types of weather that often contribute to car accidents. Such weather includes:

  • Rain

Any amount of rain can reduce a driver’s visibility and can impact the ability of a vehicle to stop as readily as it ordinarily could. Rain makes it easier for a vehicle to slide on the road. Additionally, it can reduce the speed at which it’s safe to drive and increase congestion, often causing those who are late to attempt going faster than is safe.

  • Fog

Fog makes visibility much more difficult, and again, can impact travel times, the amount of traffic, and the speed at which it’s safe to drive.

  • High winds and dust storms

Higher winds can cause debris and dust to blow through the air, impacting visibility for drivers. It can also increase travel time and decrease speeds at which it’s safe to operate a vehicle.

It’s important to understand that while certain speeds and distances between vehicles may be safe under certain weather conditions, those same speeds and distances may become dangerous during bad weather. Driving responsibly is dependent upon multiple factors, such as the weather. Drivers must account for weather conditions when ensuring that they are driving responsibly.
